Minki (Philip) Lee is a junior at Ann Arbor Skyline High School. He has been studying with
his clarinet instructor, Angela Duquette, since seventh grade. Originally starting his music
career with a Bb clarinet, Phillip first picked up his now primary instrument,
bass clarinet, in the eighth grade. Since then, under valuable teachings of Angela Duquette,
and his band director, Jason Smith, Phillip has been a principal bass clarinet and contrabass
clarinet player for Skyline Symphony Band the past two years. Phillip played as a member
of the pit orchestra for Skyline Theater’s production Shrek the Musical in 2018. Marching
band has also been a big component of Phillip’s life since 2016. Now leading the clarinets
as a section leader, Phillip is enjoying the cultures of Skyline Marching Band.
Phillip has also engaged in different activities outside of school. Since 2017, Phillip has
been a member of University of Michigan’s Youth Symphonic Band. He has been a member of
Michigan All-State Band and performed at the 2018 and 2019 Michigan Music Conferences. With
his successful performance at MSBOA state solo and ensemble, Philip also participated in
2018 Michigan Youth Arts Festival as a member of MYAF Honors Band. His clarinet ensemble was
also nominated as an outstanding ensemble for MYAF for their performance at state solo and
ensemble the previous year. In addition to winning AACB Youth Artist Scholarship Competition,
Phillip has been honorably named to be a winner of the first annual concerto competition at
his school in January 2019.
After high school, Phillip plans to study Mathematics at an undetermined institution, while
also continuing to play his instrument in marching band and different ensembles
