Ann Arbor Concert Band

In 1991, the Ann Arbor Concert Band established a scholarship competition for high school students who are outstanding wind or percussion instrumentalists. The winner of the award received a $1,000 scholarship as well as the opportunity to perform with the band at the final concert of the season. The generosity of Dave Juillet, who passed away in 1994, made the first awards possible. In July 1993, the family of Andrew Lum, a promising musician and football player at Huron High, and his mentor Dave Juillet established the Andrew J. Lum Young Artist Scholarship Fund in his memory. The award perpetuates his high standards of excellence through hard work, determination, personal dedication and enthusiasm for music.

Anna Pettit

Anna Pettit is a junior at Onsted High School and has been playing bassoon for six years. She studies with Nora Shankin in Ann Arbor.

Anna has experience playing with many musical groups including the Siena Heights Community Band, Adrian College Band, and the Jackson Youth Symphony Orchestra. She is currently a member of the University of Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Adrian College Symphony Orchestra.

Various honors bands and symphony orchestras have invited Anna to perform with them, including the Central Michigan University honors band, the MSBOA All State Middle School Honors Band, and most recently she was principal chair for the MSBOA All State Symphony Orchestra. Anna has participated in solo and ensemble for four years, playing in various ensembles.

In past summers she attended Blue Lake, Interlochen, Central Michigan University’s Double Reed Camp, and Western Michigan University’s Music Seminar. Between camps, Anna plays with the Adrian City Band. This summer is marking her seventh season with that group.

In addition to winning the AACB Young Artist Scholarship Competition, Anna won the Bowling Green State University’s Double Reed Day competition for 2017.

Anna is also the junior drum major for her high school marching band. After high school, her current plans are to study both music education and bassoon performance at an undecided institution.
