Ann Arbor Concert Band

In 1991, the Ann Arbor Concert Band established a scholarship competition for high school students who are outstanding wind or percussion instrumentalists. The winner of the award received a $1,000 scholarship as well as the opportunity to perform with the band at the final concert of the season. The generosity of Dave Juillet, who passed away in 1994, made the first awards possible. In July 1993, the family of Andrew Lum, a promising musician and football player at Huron High, and his mentor Dave Juillet established the Andrew J. Lum Young Artist Scholarship Fund in his memory. The award perpetuates his high standards of excellence through hard work, determination, personal dedication and enthusiasm for music.

 Ellen Sauer

Ellen Sauer is a senior at Pioneer High School. She has been playing flute for eight wonderful years. She currently plays principle flute with the Pioneer Symphony Band and Symphony Orchestra. Ellen also plays with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Youth Orchestra. Next year she will be studying flute performance at the University of Michigan with Professor Amy Porter. When she is not practicing, Ellen enjoys sewing, studying ethics, babysitting, and cooking. If she isn’t doing any of those things, she is probably watching an emotional British TV show.
